这种现象被称为荷叶效应，荷叶上长有微细坚硬绒毛，荷叶本身又附有生物蜡，所以表面张力非常低，水珠只能够在绒毛表面滑动。乳突的顶端均呈扁平状且中央略微凹陷。这种乳突结构用肉眼以及普通显微镜是很难察觉的，通常被称作多重纳米和微米级的超微结构。
这些大大小小的乳突和突起在荷叶表面上犹如一个挨一个隆起的“小山包”，“小山包”之间的凹陷部分充满空气，这样就在紧贴叶面上形成一层极薄，只有纳米级厚的空气层。
水在20摄氏度的理论表面张力是72mN/m，由于大大高于荷叶表面能（约30mN/m)，这时候水珠的分子极力向内收缩以减少与空气的接触面，水珠接近完美圆形，在荷叶表面滚动，不能附着在荷叶表面。

1、光固化材料：
对于UV光固化材料的自洁和耐污功能，通常是在分子结构中引入能硅或氟的结构，降低材料的表面能，或者同时在分子链中引入憎水和亲水的官能团得到两性结构。这种方法的一个重要挑战就是降低表面能的同时，材料和配方中其他组分相容性的平衡的问题。相容性差，固化后材料的表面性能就会很差。而相容性太好，其耐污自洁功能又会大打折扣。
韩国鞋类和皮革技术研究所的Jae Hwan Chuna等人采用首先使用全氟聚醚多元醇制备含有全氟结构的光固化聚氨酯材料，然后尝试在光固化材料中添加荷叶粉来降低表面能，增加疏水性。
