phrase /freɪz/ CET4 TEM4 (phrasing,phrased,phrases)。

2.N-COUNT A phrase is a short group of words that people often use as a way of saying something. The meaning of a phrase is often not obvious from the meaning of the individual words in it. 惯用语; 警句。

一、英语习语的特点
1. 结构固定
习语包括规定的词组和句子,其中的各个组成部分是固定的,它不像一般短语和词组那样可以任意拆开、替换。例如:live from hand to mouth (勉强糊口),不能写成live from the hand to the mouth,也不能写作live from a hand to a mouth; under the weather(不舒服),不能写成under weather 或under a weather;lay a foundation(打基础),不能用动词 set, put, place代替原来的动词lay。习语A stitch in time saves nine. (及时缝一针可免缝九针。)中的冠词a不能用 one代替,数词nine也不能改作eight或者 ten。这正如不可把汉语中的“乱七八糟”说成“乱八九糟”,也不可说成“糟七乱八”一样。
2. 语义完整
习语的语义是一个完整的不可分割的统一体,因此不能根据组成这个习语的各个单词的意思来理解习语,否则就会犯望文生义的错误。例如:
pull one’s socks up (振作起来,鼓起勇气,加紧努力),切不可根据组成这一习语的四个部分,把这个习语理解为“提起自己袜子”。例如:
If you want to be considered for promotion next year, you’d better pull your socks up. 如果你想明年被提升,你最好还是加把劲。
know where the shoe pinches 知道困难所在 (误:知道鞋子在哪儿夹脚)。例如:
You didn’t experience that, so you don’t know where the shoe pinches. 你没有亲身经历过,所以你不知道困难在什么地方。
这正如我们汉语中有大量的习语也不能按照字面意思去理解,如“捅马蜂窝”的意思是“闯祸”;“穿小鞋”的意思是“(受)打击,(受)排斥”等。
3. 具有历史文化渊源
英语习语都有深厚的历史和文化渊源,有的反映本民族的风俗习惯;有的包含有趣的历史史实或传说故事;有的习语来自《圣经》或莎士比亚的经典著作等。例如:
a baker’s dozen
at the eleventh hour (在最后时刻,刚好来得及):此语出自《圣经》。讲十一点钟进入葡萄园的雇工,即使只劳动一个小时,十二点钟发工资时也和十一点钟前进入葡萄园的雇工工资相同,意思是十一点钟是最后时刻,但还来得及。
二、英语习语的翻译
1. 直译法
在不违背译文语言规则,不会引起错误联想的情况下, 可以进行直译,这样译文可以保留英语习语的风格、形象和民族色彩。例如:
1) Noah’s Ark 诺亚方舟。
2) crocodile tears 鳄鱼的眼泪。
3) gentleman’s agreement 君子协定。
4) cry wolf 狼来了。
5) break the record 打破记录。
6) kill two birds with one stone 一石二鸟。
7) armed to the teeth 武装到牙齿。
8) sour grapes 酸葡萄。
9) Blood is thicker than water. 血浓于水。
10) A rolling stone gathers no moss. 滚石不生苔。
2. 套用法
有的英语习语与汉语习语有着相同的意义、相同的感情色彩、相同或相似的形象,各自的民族色彩又不十分浓厚,在这种情况下,可以直截了当地用同义的汉语习语来翻译英语习语。例如:
1) look for a needle in a haystack 大海捞针。
2) hit a man when he is down 落井下石。
3) seek truth from facts 实事求是。
4) laugh one’s head off 笑掉大牙。
5) spend money like water 挥金如土。
6) at sixes and sevens 乱七八糟。
7) One boy is a boy, two boys half a boy, three boys no boy. 一个和尚挑水喝,两个和尚抬水喝,三个和尚没水喝。
3. 意译法
翻译过程中,若直译效果不好,套用又无合适的汉语习语时,可采用意译法,即根据上下文把英语习语的含义表达出来。例如:
1) They have led a cat-and-dog life almost since the day they were married. 他们几乎是从结婚那天起过的就是经常争吵不休的生活。
a cat-and-dog life 直译为“猫狗生活”,但这一翻译不易为汉语读者理解,汉语中又没有相应的习语可套用,因此采用了意译的方法,舍弃了原习语的语言形象。
2) Peter was a dog in the manger over that microwave oven; it was no use whatever to him, but he would not let me have it. 那个微波炉对彼得毫无用处,但他就是霸着不让我用。
a dog in the manger (狗占马槽)是一个源自《伊索寓言》的习语,引申为“自己不能享用又不让别人享用”,译文只用一个“霸”字就生动体现了这个习语的内在含义。
3) She was born with a silver spoon in her mouth; she thinks she can do what she likes. 她生在富贵之家,认为凡事都可以随心所欲。
born with a silver spoon in one’s mouth(含着一把银勺出生),意思是“生在富贵人家”。
